World Turtle Day 2021
- World Turtle Day has been organized on 23 May 2021. This day is organized every year with the aim of making people aware of turtles and their habitat.
- Since 2000, ‘World Tortoise Day’ has been organized by the American non-profit organization ‘American Tartaric Zarek’ (ATR). This organization was established in the year 1990.
- This year is the 21st anniversary of ‘World Turtle Day’. According to scientists, the turtle is thought to be 200 million years ago during the time of the dinosaurs.
- They are the oldest reptiles in the world, with 300 species out of which 129 species are endangered. They are older than snakes and crocodiles. It is known that turtles can live in both freshwater and saltwater.
- There are a total of five species of turtles in India; these are Olive Ridley, Green Turtle, Loggerhead, Hawksbill and Leatherback. IUCN’s Red List lists ‘hawksbill’ turtles as ‘critically endangered’, and green turtles as ‘endangered’.
