World Intellectual Property Day Organized
World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated on 26th April. Every year the importance of intellectual property is celebrated with the aim of making it accessible to the public.
This year, World Intellectual Property Day has been celebrated under the theme ‘IP and SMEs: Taking your ideas to market’.
World Intellectual Property Day
- The day was started in 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Organization. The main purpose of which is to bring awareness about the impact on the daily life of copyrights, patents, designs and trademarks.
- The first Convention for the establishment of the ‘World Intellectual Property Organization’ came into force on 26th April only. Because of this, this day has been chosen as World Intellectual Property Day.
World Intellectual Property Organization
- The resolution was passed in the United Nations in 1967 to establish the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). But it was implemented in It is one of the 15 specialized agencies of the United Nations. The organization currently manages 26 international treaties.
- The purpose of this organization is to encourage creative activities and promote protection of Intellectual Property in the world.
- WIPO is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland. It currently has 191 countries, including 188 member countries of the United Nations, including the Cook Islands, the Holy See and the Niue.
- It should be note that all member countries of the United Nations can become its members, but this is not binding.
- Palestine has permanent observer status and about 250 NGOs and inter-governmental organizations attend its meetings as official observers.
- India became a member of WIPO in India is also a member of the following WIPO administered international treaties:
- Marrakesh Pact.
- Nairobi Treaty on Protection of Olympic symbol.
- Washington Treaty on Intellectual Property in relation to the Integrated Circuit.
- Patent Cooperation Treaty.
- Berne Convention for the Protection of Literature and Artistic Works.
- Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property.
