World Happiness Report (WHR), 2023

Recently the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN) has released the World Happiness Report (WHR), 2023.

This report evaluates the level of happiness on the basis of the following 6 key components-

  1. Healthy life expectancy,
  2. GDP per capita,
  3. Social Support,
  4. Less corruption,
  5. Generosity in the community and
  6. Freedom to take major decisions of life.

The goal of this report is to identify the key determinants of well-being.

It is based on people’s assessment of their own well-being as well as economic and social data.

This ranking of happiness is based on the average of 3 years (2020-22).

Ranking of major countries –

  • Top ranking three countries are- Finland, Denmark and Iceland respectively
  • Afghanistan, Lebanon, Sierra Leone are the three worst performing countries.
  • India has got 126th position out of 146 countries.
  • India’s performance is worse than its neighboring countries China, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Bhutan is not listed in the WHR 2023.

United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN-SDSN)

  • It was launched in 2012 under the United Nations Secretary-General. It brings together scientists and technical experts globally to promote practical solutions for sustainable development.
  • Also, it helps in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement.
  • It publishes annual reports such as the Sustainable Development Report and the World Happiness Report.
