World Environment Day is celebrated globally on 5th June every year. It is celebrated to spread awareness globally about the environmental problems and actions to be taken to deal with them.
This year World Environment Day has been celebrated under the theme “Ecosystem Restoration”.
About world environment day
- A resolution by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in December 1972 to designate 5 June as World Environment Day, following the ‘Human Environment Conference’ or ‘Stockholm Conference’ held in June 1972 (A/RES/ 2994 (XXVII)) was adopted.
- The date of 5 June coincides with the first day of the historic Stockholm Conference. World Environment Day was first observed in 1974 and since then it has been widely celebrated in more than 100
Environment and Sustainable Development Goals
- The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development emphasizes the need for a global effort to ensure the sustainable security of our planet and our natural resources.
- The Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG-14 and SDG-15, are focused on protecting underwater and land ecosystems.
