World Energy Transition Outlook-2022

Recently, the World Energy Transition Outlook-2022 was released by IRENA during the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue.

  • It said that, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), an “energy transition” is essential to tackle the global energy and climate crisis.
  • In the World Energy Transition Outlook – 2022, priority areas and actions have been determined based on available technologies. It noted that, if the target of “net zero emissions” is to be achieved by the middle of this century, these priorities and actions must be realized by 2030.
  • The energy transition is the most appropriate way to convert the fossil fuel-based global energy sector to a zero-carbon energy sector by the middle of this century.
  • It mainly emphasizes the need to reduce energy-related CO2 emissions, so as to limit climate change.

Steps taken by Government of India:

  • Inter-state transmission system has been started under Green Energy Corridor.
  • Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha and Utthan Mahabhiyan i.e. PM-KUSUM Yojana has been launched. Its aim is to promote solar powered pumps instead of diesel powered pumps in the agriculture sector.
  • The Offshore Wind Energy Policy was announced in the year 2015 to harness the potential of offshore wind energy.
  • An investment of Rs. 1,500 crore has been approved in the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA). This agency provides funding for projects related to the renewable energy sector.
  • FAME INDIA scheme has been started. FAME India stands for Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid – Electric Vehicles in India
  • Apart from this, initiatives like National Solar Mission, National Biofuel Policy, UJALA scheme for affordable LED etc. have also been taken up.
