World Asthma Day -2021

  • World Asthma Day -2021 was observed on 5 May. Every year World Asthma Day is organized by the Global Initiative for Asthma.
  • Originally, it is celebrated on the first Tuesday of May every year. The celebration of this day started in the year 1998. First World Asthma Day was celebrated in 1998, at the World Asthma Meeting in Spain, by more than 35 countries.
  • The theme of World Asthma Day for 2021 is “Uncovering Asthma Misconceptions”.
  • It aims to raise awareness about asthma, and to strive to improve the care of the disease. Because according to the World Health Organization, about 235 million people in the world suffer from asthma. If we talk about India, about 6% of children and 2% of adults are affected due to asthma.

Global Initiative for Asthma

  • “The Global Initiative for Asthma – GINA” is an organization related to asthma therapy globally. The organization works with public health officials and health care professionals globally to reduce asthma prevalence, morbidity and mortality.
  • The Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) was established in the year 1993. It was started in collaboration with the World Health Organization ‘The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).

Asthma

  • It is one of the non-communicable diseases. It is a respiratory disease, due to which the person has difficulty in breathing. The trachea of a person suffering from asthma is inflamed, and the respiratory tract shrinks. Asthma is the most common disease in children.
