Visit of the Prime Minister of Nepal to India

Recently the Prime Minister of Nepal visited India and concluded many important agreements.

This was Sher Bahadur Deuba’s first visit to India after becoming the Prime Minister of Nepal for the fifth time. Decisions were taken on some important projects during this visit.

Key decisions taken during the visit

  • Railways: A 35 km long cross-border railway line connecting Jayanagar in Bihar to Kurtha in Nepal was started. This is the first broad gauge passenger rail connectivity service between the two countries.
  • Electricity: India has handed over the Solu Corridor to Nepal. It is 90 km long and 132kV capacity power transmission line. It is manufactured under the Indian Line of Credit. The Kataiyya-Kusaha and Raxaul-Parwanipur cross border power transmission lines were inaugurated in the year 2017.
  • Both sides will expedite the implementation of Pancheshwar Multipurpose Project.
  • In the year 2017, the two sides had signed an agreement for the construction of a bridge over the Mechi River. The bridge is part of the “South Asian Sub-Regional Economic Cooperation road connectivity program” of the Asian Development Bank.
  • Nepal has joined the International Solar Alliance led by India.
  • India’s RuPay card was launched in Nepal. RuPay cards are already operational in Bhutan, Singapore and UAE.
  • The Prime Minister of Nepal also raised the issue of border dispute between the two countries. Kalapani is situated at the tri-junction of India, Nepal and China. India has control over it. But, Nepal claims this area historically and according to the map.
