US lifted sanctions on International Criminal Court officials.

Recently US President Joe Biden has lifted the sanctions imposed on the two top officials of the International Criminal Court.

These officials were sanctioned by former President Donald Trump.

Background:

  • It is noteworthy that the Trump administration had banned two ICC officials after investigating the alleged crimes by US troops in Afghanistan, by the investigating court. Accordingly, freezing of accounts of officers and, entry into the country, were prohibited.
  • According to the US Attorney-General, the US Department of Justice has found enough evidence that raises serious concerns about the long history of financial corruption and malfeasance at the highest level in the prosecution office.
  • In addition, US officials have also held Russia responsible for manipulating the International Criminal Court in its favor.
  • It may only exercise its jurisdiction when a country is either unwilling or genuinely unable to investigate and prosecute these grave crimes.

About International Criminal Court:

  • The International Criminal Court -ICC is the last court for the prosecution of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Its office is located in The Hague, Netherlands.
  • It has been set up to prosecute and punish criminals guilty of serious crimes against international communities.ICC is the first of its kind Permanent International Criminal Court in the world.
  • It began operations on 1 July 2002, upon the entry into force of the Rome Statute, a multilateral treaty that serves as the court’s foundational and governing document.
  • Court expenditures are primarily met by member states, however, it also receives voluntary contributions from governments, international organizations, private individuals, corporations and other institutions.

The ICC can examine in the context of only 4 issues, including-

  1. Genocide
  2. Crime against humanity
  3. War crime
  4. Crimes of aggression
  • Let it be known that 123 nations are parties to the Rome Statute and recognize the authority of the ICC.
  • India is not a member of the International Criminal Court, along with the US, China, Israel and Russia are also not members of the International Criminal Court.
