Services preference in Detail Application Form

The order of preference of services for civil services is asked when a candidate has qualified for the main exam. An aspirant should go for the UPSC service preference in order to their interest and popularity. This order of preference is very significant when the aspirant gets qualified for the services as they will be offered services according to the order of preferences mentioned. Although, candidates can change preference by choosing a lower option from the preference list they cannot select any higher option.

Some students underestimate themselves and list their preference first for lower services so that they get it for sure but there is no need to underestimate yourself when you have qualified for the Mains.

Always start with the very first service, that is the All India service, then group A and group B services. Don’t leave any service due to overconfidence but put all of them in descending order so that in case you don’t get the desired service still you have some options left. The results of the IAS exam can be very unpredictable and you may not get the best services even if you are a topper.

Know about the responsibilities and posting of all the services. Maybe, you look down upon some services, to begin with, but they are better options than private jobs for other technical jobs. Make sure you do your research so that you don’t regret it later, check some basic information and take advice from the Civil Service exam experts.

The allocation of cadre and service depends on students’ rank preference vacancies and even categories. Therefore, it becomes one of the important factors in deciding the career of UPSC aspirants.

What should I do before filling service preference in DAF

First of all, candidates must decide for themselves the type of service they want to get into. After this, go through every service in detail so that you can understand the demand of those services. It will help you sort out your priorities. It is also suggested to communicate to people serving in those Job profiles to gain a new perspective.

Now shortlist the services that you are interested in. Also, think about the type of life that you will be going to lead if you get into that service.

If you like to deal with policymaking or administration you can opt for IAS or if you want to work in different countries you can go for IFS. Additionally, if you have a keen interest in law and order you can opt for IPS.

If you are still in confusion then make a list of the type of work you are interested in and what you are good at so that you can choose services as per your interest. Also, consult with somebody who is in the service so that you can easily look into the reality. You can also take guidance from your friends and families and experience people. They will always guide you in the right direction if you are clueless.

And lastly, do extensive research about the salary, perks and benefits as they differ from service to service but keep the priority of work first.

Don’t understand yourself while listing preference for services. This is the most common mistake that candidates make while filling the DAF. If you are not sure to score good marks in the Mains exam then start with the very first service which is the All India service then group A and group B services.

Don’t skip any services due to overconfidence but place them in a list in descending order. Also, visit the official website for the latest updates on dates and exams of UPSC exams.
