UNEP@50: United Nations Environment Program completes 50 years

The annual report of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) noted the completion of 50 years of its establishment.

The report identifies the following 3 actions under Planetary Actions:

  1. Climate related work- This includes ‘Net-Zero Asset Owner Alliance’ for low carbon emission projects, International Methane Emissions Observatory, ‘Seed Capital Assistance Facility’ etc.
  2. Nature related work – This includes the adoption of eco-economic accounting systems, methods such as ecosystem-accounting, the beginning of the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-30), etc.
  3. Chemicals and pollution related work – This includes the launch of the Global Assessment of Air Pollution Law, International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, spreading awareness of hazardous lead in batteries, etc.

About the UNEP

  • UNEP United Nations Environment Program was established in the year 1972 through the Stockholm Declaration. It’s headquarter is located in Nairobi, Kenya.
  • It is a global authority. Its task is to set the environmental agenda and promote its coherent implementation.
  • It works with representatives and stakeholders from 193 member countries, including India, and civil society, businesses and other key groups.

UNEP has 7 broad thematic areas of work:

  • Climate change, disasters and conflicts, ecosystem management, environmental governance, chemicals and waste, resource efficiency and the environment under review.
  • It relies on voluntary contributions for 95 percent of its income. It hosts the United Nations Environment Assembly. This assembly is the world’s highest level decision-making body on environmental issues.

Multilateral Environmental Agreement under UNEP

It administers 15 multilateral environmental agreements. Also, provides them with secretarial assistance.

These agreements include –

  • Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD),
  • Convention on International Trade in Threatened Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES),
  • Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wildlife (CMS),
  • “Basel Convention” on the control of cross-border transfer of hazardous waste materials and their disposal,
  • “Rotterdam Convention” on the prior informed consent procedure for certain hazardous chemicals and pesticides in international trade
  • Stockholm Convention on Sustainable Organic Pollutants
  • “Minamata Convention” on Mercury,
  • “Vienna Convention” for the protection of the ozone layer, etc.
