The United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) has adopted a landmark resolution called “End Plastic Pollution: Towards an internationally legally binding instrument”.

Delegates from 175 countries of the world have supported a resolution related to plastic pollution at the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-5) in Nairobi.

The resolution seeks to end plastic pollution and adopt a legally binding international agreement by the year 2024.

Under this legally binding agreement, countries will be required to contribute to the purposes of this resolution. Under this, countries have to develop their own national action plans. Implemented and updated.

About this resolution:

  • It is based on three preliminary draft resolutions introduced by Peru, Rwanda and Japan.
  • It deals with the entire life cycle of plastics including its production, design and disposal.
  • Under this, an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee will be formed. The committee has been given the target of drafting a legally binding global agreement by the end of 2024. This committee will start its work in the year 2022.

Plastic Pollution:

  • Plastic pollution was equal to two million ton in the year 1950. This increased to 848 million ton in the year 2017.
  • It is projected to double by the year 2040.
  • By the year 2050, greenhouse gas emissions from plastic production, use and disposal will account for 15% of the emissions approved to limit global warming to 1.5 °C.
  • More than 800 marine and coastal species face the ingestion, ingestion, and other associated dangers of plastic pollution.

  • It is the world’s highest decision-making body on environmental matters.
  • It is the governing body of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
  • Its meeting is held once in two years. Its purpose is to set priorities for global environmental policies and to develop international environmental legislation.
  • It was formed in June 2012.
