Umling La, located in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, is one of the highest motorable roads in the world.
It is at an altitude of 5.793 meters (19,005ft) above sea level. This 54 km long road passing through Umling La Pass connects Chisumle with Demchok village.
This road project has been constructed by ‘Border Roads Organization’ (BRO) under ‘Project HIMANK’. Its construction took 6 years.
Border Roads Organization(BRO)
The Border Roads Organization deals with the construction and management of roadways in the border areas of India. Due to the hilly terrain in the border areas, the roads continue to break due to landslides and falling rocks. The organization has to work throughout the year to keep them running smoothly. It was established in 1960.
