UJJWALA Yojana – UJJWALA 2.0
Recently on August 10, 2021, in Mahoba, Uttar Pradesh, the Prime Minister launched Ujjwala 2.0 (Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana – PMUY) by handing over LPG connections to the people.
UJJWALA YOJANA
UJJWALA 1.0
- It is implemented by the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Ujjwala 1.0 was launched in 2016, during which the target was to provide deposit free LPG connections to 5 crore women members of BPL families.
- Subsequently, in April 2018, the scheme was expanded to cover women beneficiaries of seven more categories (SC/ST, PMAY, AAY, Most Backward Classes, Tea Gardeners, Vanvasi etc.).
- Under this, EMI facility will be provided for stove and refill cost (interest free loan). The scheme complements the ‘Give It Up Campaign’ of the Prime Minister, through which a large number of middle class households have voluntarily given up their LPG subsidy.
- The target was revised to 8 crore LPG connections and the target was achieved in August 2019, seven months before the target date.
Ujjwala 2.0
- The provision of one crore additional LPG connections under PMUY scheme was announced in the Union Budget for the financial year 21-22.
- This one crore additional PMUY connections (under Ujjwala 2.0) aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to low-income households that could not be covered under the first phase of PMUY.
- With deposit free LPG connection, Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 will provide first refill and hotplate (stove) free of cost to the beneficiaries.
- Also, the enrollment process will require minimal paperwork. In Ujjwala 2.0, migrants will not be required to submit ration card or address proof.
- A self-declaration will suffice for both ‘Family Declaration’ and ‘Proof of Address’. Ujjwala 2.0 will help in achieving the Prime Minister’s vision of universal access to LPG.
