Tripartite MoU signed amongst Ministry of Youth Affairs
Recently a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to address the problem of doping in sports.
- Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Hyderabad have signed an MoU.
- Its objectives are to build testing capacity of nutritional supplements in India, promote research opportunities in the anti-doping domain, provide dope free nutritional supplements, etc.
- Doping refers to the use of certain banned substances by athletes to enhance their performance.
Following are some of the major substances used in doping:
- Androgenic agents such as anabolic steroids: These help athletes train harder and build more muscle.
- Stimulant: It helps to mask fatigue in athletes by increasing heart rate and blood flow.
- Diuretic and masking agent: It is used to excrete fluid from the body. It can hide other drug use and can also help (unrealistically) lose weight.
- Gene doping: This is the manipulation of the body’s cells or genes by the use of performance-enhancing substances.
- Blood doping: In this the blood is first removed from the body and then injected back into the body, so that the oxygen level can be increased.
Monitoring of doping in sports–
- The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) monitors doping in all forms of competitive sport.
- National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has been constituted at the national level. It has been given statutory recognition under the National Anti-Doping Act,
