The National Achievement Survey (NAS) report for the 2021

Recently the Ministry of Education has released the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021 report.

National Achievement Survey: NAS

  • It is the biggest nationwide, sample-based education survey in India. The survey is conducted at the district, state and national level to provide feedback on the learning ability of students. It is organized under the aegis of the Department of School Education and Literacy under the Ministry of Education.
  • Its organizing organization is the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for NAS
  • The design and components of this survey have been prepared by NCERT.
  • NAS 2021 has been conducted through OMR-based achievement test in 22 different languages.
  • This survey is conducted for the students of class 3, 5, 8 and
  • The students of classes 3 and 5 are assessed in three subjects of the curriculum. Class 8 students are assessed in four subjects, and Class 10 students in five subjects.
  • The survey covers state government schools, government aided schools, unaided private schools and central government schools.

Key findings of NAS 2021:

  • There has been a decline in the performance levels of all subjects and classes. 178% of the students admitted that learning at home felt cumbersome during the pandemic. 24% of the students did not have digital devices available at home.
  • Mothers of 18% of the children could not read or write. 7% of schools are facing teacher absenteeism.

Significance of NAS:

  • It provides assessment of student achievement at district, state and national level.
  • Provides input for designing policy and educational initiatives to improve quality and ensure equity in learning.

The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER)

  • ASER is another survey that provides a comprehensive assessment of learning ability. It was started by the NGO “Pratham” in the year
  • ASER is an annual household survey covering all rural districts.
  • This includes all children. These include school dropouts or children who have never been to school.
  • The survey assesses the schooling status of all children in the age group of 3-16 At the same time, basic reading ability and basic arithmetic ability are assessed for all children in the age group of 5-16 years.
