Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary
- Recently, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has declared an area of 32sq km around the Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary as Eco Sensitive Zone.
- Eco-sensitive areas reduce the pressure of development around protected areas, national parks or wildlife sanctuaries and act as a buffer zone for this.
Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary
- Thane Creek Flamingo was declared a sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972 by the Government of Maharashtra. It is the second largest marine sanctuary in Maharashtra.
- It is situated on the west bank of Thane Creek. Malvan Sanctuary is the first marine sanctuary of Maharashtra.
- The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary has been declared an “important bird zone” by the Bombay Natural History Society.
- There are 39 species of mangroves found in this sanctuary.Along with it is home to 167 species of birds like flamingo, 45 species of fish, 59 species of butterflies, 67 species of insect.
- The mangrove forests of this region have been declared as reserved forests under the Indian Forest Act. In addition, these mangrove forests are included under the Coastal Regulation Zone.
Thane Creek:
- It is an entrance on the coastline of the Arabian Sea separating the city of Mumbai from the Indian mainland. Thane Creek is divided into two parts: the Ghodbunder-Thane stretch and the Thane -Trombay (Uran) stretch.
Eco-Sensitive Zones
- It is notified under the Environment Protection Act, These are 10 km of economically fragile areas of national parks, protected areas and wildlife sanctuaries.
Coastal Regulation Zone
- These are areas that are affected by the tide. According to the Coastal Regulation Zone Rules, 1991, 500 meters of land between high tide line and low tide line is declared as coastal regulation zone.
