Thailand organises series of events to mark 75 years of diplomatic ties with India
Recently, Thailand has organized several events to commemorate 75 years of diplomatic relations with India.
Several events and activities have been planned throughout the year to reflect the multi-faceted cooperation between the two sides.
Since 1947, India and Thailand have had vibrant bilateral relations. In recent years, India’s ‘Act East’ policy has been supported by Thailand’s ‘Act West’ policy. This has further strengthened the relations between the two countries.
India-Thailand Relations-
- Economic: The value of bilateral trade in the year 2021-22 has reached an all-time high with US$ 15
- Defense Cooperation: A Memorandum of Understanding (2012) on Defense Cooperation has been signed. Indo-Thai Carpet and Maitri military exercises are conducted.
- India is participating in the Cobra Gold military exercise since It is the largest military exercise in the Asia Pacific region.
- Bilateral Institutional Mechanisms: Joint Commission Meetings, Foreign Office Consultations, Joint Task Forces etc.
Major initiatives of connectivity between the two countries:
- India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway,
- Asian Highway Network (under UNESCAP),
- BIMSTEC Transport Infrastructure and Logistics Study (BTILS) under BIMSTEC framework.
- Cultural: Buddhism is a common thread that connects the two countries. Millions of Thai Buddhists visit Lumbini, Bodh Gaya, Sarnath and Kushinagar.
- Regional Cooperation: Both countries cooperate closely in ASEAN, East Asia Summit, BIMSTEC, Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC), Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) etc.
- Indian Population: About 250,000 people of Indian origin live in Thailand.
