On July 04, 2021, the 119th death anniversary of the famous spiritual master ‘Swami Vivekananda’ was celebrated across the world.

He was born on January 12, 1863 in the then ‘Calcutta’ (Bengal Presidency), he was known as Narendra Nath Dutt in his childhood.

Key Points

  • His guru’s name was Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Swami Vivekananda met Ramakrishna Paramhansa in the year 1881.
  • When Vivekananda was going through a spiritual crisis and contemplating questions like the existence of God, the pure and selfless spirit of Ramakrishna Paramahansa greatly influenced Swami Vivekananda and a spiritual teacher-disciple relationship was formed between the two.
  • In the name of his guru, Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Mission and Ramakrishna Math. Vivekananda has an important role in propagating Indian philosophy, especially Vedanta and Yoga, in the world, as well as his role in connecting nationalism with spirituality during British India is considered very important.
  • He earned global fame at the Chicago World Religions Conference in September 1893 and it was through this that Indian spirituality was spread globally.
  • He returned to India in January 1897, after returning, on May 1, 1897, he founded the Ramakrishna Mission.
  • In the year 1899, he once again traveled west, where he spent most of his time on the west coast of America. In the early months of 1902, his health started deteriorating and on July 4, 1902, his life came to an end.
