Supreme Court upholds validity of OBC quota

Recently the Supreme Court has upheld the constitutional validity of 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in NEET UG and NEET-PG. Therefore, counseling has been allowed to resume for NEET-UG and NEET-PG courses.

Supreme Court’s decision:

  • The quota of 10% for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in All India Quota (AIQ) seats will be retained.
  • The question of validity of EWS norms including income limit will be decided by the Supreme Court in March 2022. The criterion of Gross Annual Family Income limit of Rs.8 lakh will be applicable for identification of EWS as notified originally.
