Villagers’ stir against solar plants protects khejri trees

Recently, the Bishnoi community has raised objections to the proposed solar power plants in Rajasthan. This community has strongly opposed the felling of Khejri trees.

The khejri tree has the ability to survive in the dry season. Due to this feature, it plays an important role in maintaining the ecosystem of the Thar region.

It helps in retaining the nutrients of the soil. At the same time, it also contributes in ensuring good yield of desert crops and food plants.

Khejri Tree:

  • The Khejri tree is the state tree of the state of Rajasthan in India. In Rajasthan this tree is also known as ‘Khejri’ or ‘Janti’, and another name for Khejri Tree is ‘Gaf’ tree. Khejri tree is called Prosopis cinerea in English which is also its scientific name,
  • The most prominent and abundant tree of the state of Rajasthan in India is Khejri, which was declared the ‘State Tree of Rajasthan’ in the year 1982-83. In India, apart from the state of Rajasthan, the Khejri tree is also found in states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana.

Uses: It is important as fodder for livestock and as a source of firewood. The Khejri tree is a summer fruit tree and its fruit is cylindrical in shape, which is a pod with many seeds. Its pods are up to 20 cm long, this fruit of the Khejri tree is called Sangri, which is a kind of vegetable.
