Shigella bacteria cause fatal food poisoning in Kerala
Recently there has been an infection of Shigella bacterium in Kerala, which Kerala is trying to prevent from spreading.
Shigella is a genus of bacteria. This causes an infection called shigellosis.
Shigellosis is a gastrointestinal infection. It is caused by one of four species of S. shigella bacteria.
It is the second leading cause of bacterial diarrhea worldwide. It is the third leading cause of death in children under the age of 5.
It spreads through contaminated food or water or through contact with an infected person.
It is present as a localized epidemic in most low- or middle-income countries (LMICs).
