Sedition and UAPA cases declines

According to the Home Ministry data released recently, for the first time in the last six years, there has been a decline of 35% in the total cases of sedition. The number of cases related to this was 93 in the year 2019, which has come down to 73 in the year 2020.

  • Sedition is defined under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). This section provides for punishment for acts that spread hatred towards the government. It is a non-bailable offence.
  • There has also been a decline in cases registered under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The number of cases registered under this was 1,226 in the year 2019, which has come down to 796 in the year 2020. UAPA is an anti-terrorism law. Individuals are designated as terrorists on certain grounds set forth in this law.
