What is Sherpas

  • Sherpas are the personal representative of the head of government preparing for international summits such as the G7 and G20 summits.
  • Sherpa usually refers to “Sherpa for G7 summit”, but this designation can be extended to various regular conferences requiring participation of the head of the country. For example, BRICS Sherpa refers to the representatives of the BRICS nation. Sherpas are generally quite influential, although they do not have the authority to make the final decision on an agreement.

Why is it called Sherpa?

  • The name Sherpa is derived from “Sherpa people”, a Nepali ethnic group. They serve as guides and porters throughout the Himalayas. Thus, designating the group as Sherpa refers to the fact that, Sherpa prepares the way for the Head of the Nation at the Head Summit.
