Second BRICS Sherpas’ and Sous Sherpas’ meeting concludes

Recently, a meeting of the second BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas has been held to discuss the preparations for the scheduled meeting of the BRICS Foreign Ministers. Earlier the first BRICS Sherpa meeting was held in Curitiba, Brazil in the year 2019 under the chairmanship of Brazil.

Key Points

  • The meeting of BRICS Sherpas and Sous Sherpas convened under the chairmanship of India was planned from 25 to 28 May. In this meeting, BRICS partners discussed various issues.

What is Sherpas

  • Sherpas are the personal representative of the head of government preparing for international summits such as the G7 and G20 summits.
  • Sherpa usually refers to “Sherpa for G7 summit”, but this designation can be extended to various regular conferences requiring participation of the head of the country. For example, BRICS Sherpa refers to the representatives of the BRICS nation. Sherpas are generally quite influential, although they do not have the authority to make the final decision on an agreement.

Why is it called Sherpa?

  • The name Sherpa is derived from “Sherpa people”, a Nepali ethnic group. They serve as guides and porters throughout the Himalayas. Thus, designating the group as Sherpa refers to the fact that, Sherpa prepares the way for the Head of the Nation at the Head Summit.
