Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s death anniversary
- The Prime Minister has paid tributes to India’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 72nd death anniversary on 15 December. He died on 15 December 1950 in Bombay.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
- Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875. He was the country’s first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister from August 15, 1947 to December 15, 1950.
- In the field of social reform, he worked extensively for alcohol consumption, untouchability, caste discrimination and women’s upliftment.
- Along with the national freedom movement, Kheda Satyagraha in 1918 and Bardoli Satyagraha in 1928 worked for the interests of farmers.
- It was the women of Bardoli who gave Vallabhbhai Patel the title of ‘Sardar’.
- Sardar Patel is also known as the ‘Patron Saint of Indian Civil Servants’ for establishing the modern All India Services.
- He was a great freedom fighter. After independence, his role in the integration of princely states was very important.
- His role was very important in the inclusion of Hyderabad in India.
He headed various committees of the Constituent Assembly of India-
- Advisory Committee on Fundamental Rights.
- Committee on Minorities and Tribal and Excluded Areas.
- Provincial Constitution Committee.
Statue of Unity
- The Statue of Unity has been built in honor of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It was inaugurated on October 31, 2018, on the occasion of his 143rd birth anniversary.
- In January 2020, it was included in the Eight Wonders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
