Samudrayaan Mission

Recently, under the Samudrayaan mission, 3 persons will be sent 6000 meters below the surface in the sea.

  • As a part of the ‘Samudrayan Mission’ launched by the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences, India now aims to send three men to a depth of 6000 meters below the sea surface for exploration.
  • According to the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the Samudrayaan mission is expected to be completed by the year 2026.
  • This is India’s first unique manned ocean mission which is a part of Rs 6000 crore Deep Ocean Mission.
  • This campaign marks the beginning of India’s efforts in the era of “Blue Economy”, which is going to play a major role in building the overall economy of India during the years to come.
  • A vehicle named ‘Matsya’ will take three persons to a depth of 6000 meters in the ocean to search for deep sea resources like minerals.
  • MATSYA 6000 is being designed and developed by the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NOIT), Chennai, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
  • The vehicle will facilitate direct observation by humans in the deep sea in search of manned submersible mineral resources rich in nickel, cobalt, rare earth elements, manganese etc. Also collects various samples, which can be used for later analysis.
  • India has a unique maritime position with nine coastal states and 1,382 islands along with a coastline of 7,517 km.
  • Its capacity for human protection is 12 hours in normal conditions, and 96 hours in emergency.

Deep Ocean Mission:

  • It was approved by the Ministry of Earth Sciences in June 2021. It aims to explore the deep sea for resources, develop deep sea technologies for sustainable use of ocean resources as well as support the blue economy initiatives of the Government of India.
  • The estimated cost of this mission with duration of five years is Rs 4,077 crore which will be implemented in a phased manner.
