Background of the case

  • It was expected that due to the S-400 missile system deal, the US could sanction India through the Countering America’s Adversaries through Sanctions Act- CAATSA.
  • It should be noted that US president Donald Trump warned India in the year 2018 that, if India makes this deal with the Russia, India’s military cooperation with America will be affected.
  • India said in this regard, Russia also deals with China on defense deals, and Russia can also sell it to Pakistan through China. India’s defense system could be weakened if India does not undertake such arms deals.
  • However, the United States has already imposed sanctions on China and Turkey due to similar defense deals.

Importance of S-400 air defense system for India

  • This agreement between India and Russia on the purchase of the S-400 defense missile system is very important from a strategic point of view.
  • The reason for its importance is that, the S-400 Triumph is a surface-to-air missile system (SAM). The system can destroy unmanned aerial vehicles, ballistic and cruise missiles, at a height of 30 km within a range of 400 km.
  • With the induction of S-400 aircraft into India, it will be able to track Pakistani aircraft flying in Indian airspace.
  • The S-400 missile is believed to be significantly advanced from the US-developed missile “Terminal High Altitude Area Defense – THAAD”.

The Countering America’s Adversaries through Sanctions Act, CAATSA

  • The main objective of the CAATSA i.e. The Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, CAATSA is to respond to Iran, North Korea and Russia through punitive measures.
  • This includes sanctions by the US against countries that engage in important transactions with Russia’s defense and intelligence sectors.
