Roadmap prepared for setting up foreign campuses of Indian universities

Recently a Central Committee has been constituted to prepare a roadmap for the establishment of overseas campuses of Indian universities.

A committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Dr. K. Radhakrishnan. This committee has been entrusted with the task of preparing a roadmap for opening of campuses abroad by ‘Institutions of Higher Education (HEIs)’.

The move comes after IIT Delhi submitted a proposal to open its centers in Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

Earlier, the central government had issued guidelines to allow Institutions of Eminence (IOE) to open foreign campuses. For this it was necessary to obtain prior approval from the Ministry of Education, and No Objection Certificate from the Ministry of External Affairs and Home Affairs.

Internationalization of education has also been proposed in the National Policy on Education (NEP) 2020. It allows foreign universities to operate in India. Similarly, it encourages the best performing Indian universities to set up campuses in other countries.

Benefits of setting up campuses of Indian Institutes of Higher Education (HEls) in other countries:

  • The global presence of Indian higher education institutions will increase.
  • It will help in improving the international ranking.
  • Benefits from foreign higher education institutions setting up their campus in India:
  • Indian students will be able to study contemporary and world-class recognized courses with ease in a home environment.
  • More students will have access to world class courses and pedagogy at less cost.
  • The academic skills of the Indian teaching community will increase.
  • It will help in improving the Gross Enrollment Ratio to 50 percent.
