Revised Draft National Data Governance Framework Policy (NDGFP) by Govt

Recently the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) released the draft National Data Governance Framework Policy (NDGFP).

  • NDGFP aims to enhance access, quality and use of data in line with the emerging technology needs of the current and next decade.
  • This policy will replace the draft ‘India Data Accessibility and Use Policy, 2022’ issued earlier. This data access policy faced severe criticism due to the lack of licensing and data protection legislation for citizen data in India.

Salient features of the new draft policy-

Objective: To accelerate digital governance, ensure standardized data management and security standards across all levels of government, etc.

Applicable for the following:

All government departments and entities, all non-personal datasets and data and platforms, rules and standards governing access and use of researchers and startups, etc.

India Data Management Office (IDMO): It will be set up under Digital India Corporation (DIC) under MeitY.

It will be responsible for the following:

  • Formulate policy, manage it and review and amend it from time to time.
  • Promote data, Artificial Intelligence (AI) based research and startup ecosystem by working with Digital India Startup Hub.
