Govt approves commercial release of Nano-DAP

Recently Nano-Diammonium Phosphate (Nano-DAP) has been approved for commercial release.

According to the information received, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has approved Nano-DAP. The move is expected to reduce the subsidy burden and India’s import dependence on DAP.

India meets more than half of its DAP requirement through imports. It is imported mainly from West Asia and Jordan.

Nano-DAP is a next generation fertilizer produced by IFFCO and Coromandel International. It is produced from nanoparticles of nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen and phosphorus are the primary micronutrients for plants.

A nanoparticle is a microscopic particle. Its size ranges from 1 to 100 nanometers. In the year 2021, IFFCO launched Nano-Urea.

The government is also working on plans to launch Nano-Potash, Nano-Zinc, and Nano-Copper fertilizers.

Benefits of using Nano-DAP-

  • Higher use efficiency: A 500ml bottle of Nano-DAP will provide the same benefits as a bag of conventional soil nutrient.
  • Agriculture cost will come down. This will help in doubling the income of the farmers.
  • Agricultural sustainability will be improved through higher nutrient uptake, reduced water consumption and reduced environmental damage.

Concerns:

  • Continuous use of nano-particles will increase the amount of nanoparticles in soil and crops, which may have adverse effects.
  • High concentrations of nanoparticles will also have health effects.
