Registering a political party

Section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951 deals with the registration of political parties.

  • A party seeking registration has to file an application with the Election Commission of India. The application has to be submitted within 30 days from the date of its formation. It is subject to the guidelines of the Election Commission.
  • Under the guidelines, the applicant shall get the proposed name of the party published in two national and two local dailies, so that objections, if any, regarding the proposed registration can be submitted. The candidates of the registered party with the Election Commission will get priority in the matter of allotment of free symbols over the independent candidates.
