REAIM 2023 | World’s first global summit on Responsible AI in the Military kicks off in The Netherlands
Recently the world’s first “International Summit on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in the Military Sector (REAIM)” has been held in The Hague, Netherlands.
It is the first global initiative to contain the proliferation of Lethal Automatic Weapons (LAWs) and to incorporate an ethical and moral factor into rapidly evolving weaponization technology.
Significantly, rapidly developing weaponization technology has the potential to cause devastating damage.
Objectives of REAIM 2023-
- Putting the topic of responsible use of AI in the military at the top of the political agenda.
- Mobilize and activate a broad set of stakeholders to contribute to concrete future steps.
- To promote and enhance knowledge through sharing of experiences, best practices and solutions.
Role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Military Sector
- Soldiers get the facility of training and simulation in a similar environment to provide them with a battlefield experience.
- Monitoring helps to provide situational awareness especially in difficult border areas.
- Provides offensive capability. An example is self-armed drones that can engage targets.
- Can provide reconnaissance and tactical support in combat situations such as targeted strikes.
Concerns related to the use of AI in the military field
- Moral hazard: The principle of distinction between civilian and military assets and population and the principle of proportionality of deployment of forces are compromised.
- Data bias: AI is loaded with data such as racial or gender bias. This affects rational decision making.
Steps taken by India to increase the use of AI in the military sector
- Dedicated laboratories have been set up in the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) for research related to the use of AI in different domains.
- Defense AI Project Agency (DAIPA) enables AI based processes in defense organizations.
