Ransomware Report 2022 released by CERT-In
Recently the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT – In) has released the Ransomware Report, 2022.
CERT-In is the national nodal agency for responding to computer security incidents. It functions under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Key Findings of the Report
- Compared to the year 2021, there has been a 53 percent increase in ransomware incidents in 2022.
- Not only money, but also geopolitical conflicts have contributed to an increase in ransomware attacks this year.
- There have been widespread ransomware attacks across critical sectors. Also, its frequency and complexity have also increased.
- Lockbit was the most notorious ransomware variant in India. This was followed by Macoop and DJVU / Stop Ransomware.
- The year 2022 saw new variants like Vice Society and Blue Sky. Information Technology (IT) and IT-enabled services sector was the most affected sector by the ransomware attack.
- This was followed by the finance and manufacturing sectors. The ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) ecosystem is gaining prominence.
- The Macop and Phobos ransomware groups have primarily targeted medium and small organizations. In contrast, variants such as DJVU/Stop target individuals.
- Ransomware is a category of malware. It gains access to computers and renders them unusable for their legitimate users.
