Quality of Life Index for the Elderly 2021

Quality of Life Index for the Elderly 2021

Recently, the Quality of Life for Elderly Index, 2021 has been published by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister: EAC-PM.

  • The index has been prepared by the Institute for Competitiveness at the request of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council.
  • This index-based report identifies the regional pattern of income growth in Indian states as well as assesses the overall status of aging in the country.
  • Using this index as a tool, state governments and stakeholders can identify the areas on which they need to make additional efforts to provide a comfortable life to their older generation.

Method of Assessment:

  • The structure of this index consists of four pillars – financial well-being, social welfare, health system and income security.
  • To establish a fair comparison between states, a distinction has been made between states with older populations (more than five million aged people) and states with relatively old population (less than five million aged people).
  • Two separate categories have been prescribed for the North Eastern States and Union Territories. This determination has been made on the basis of their geography and share of elderly population.

Key findings

  • The Health Systems column displays the highest national average at an all-India level. This is followed by social welfare, financial welfare and finally the income security pillar.
  • Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh are the highest scoring states among the states with older and relatively older population respectively.
  • Chandigarh and Mizoram are the highest scoring regions in the Union Territories and North Eastern Region States category respectively.
