The leading analyst of higher education ‘QS’ (Quacquarelli Symonds) has recently released the 18th ranking of higher educational institutions and International University globally.

Quacquarelli Symonds international ranking on higher education also has the approval of the International Ranking Experts Group (IREG).

Top 3 institutions in the world in the report:

  1. ‘Massachusetts Institute of Technology’ which has topped the list for the tenth year in a row.
  2. ‘Oxford University’ which has secured the second position for the first time since the year
  3. Stanford University and Cambridge University have been ranked third together.

Performance of Indian Institutions:

  • There are three universities in India that have made it to the top-200 ranks, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and IIT Delhi.
  • Jawaharlal Nehru University has been featured in the QS World University Rankings for the first time and is placed in the 561-570 ranking band.
  • Out of 35 universities in India, 17 have achieved an increase in the Citations per faculty member score for research paper, while the performance of 12 universities has fallen in this indicator.

Challenges:

  • However, Indian universities are struggling with the ‘institutional teaching capability’ criteria of QS. Out of 35 universities in India, 23 have declined in the ‘Faculty-Student Ratio Indicator’, and only 6 have improved in this indicator.
  • No Indian university has been able to make it to the ‘Top 250’ in the Faculty-Student Ratio category.

  1. Academic Reputation
  2. Employer Reputation
  3. Faculty-Student Ratio
  4. Citations per faculty
  5. Proportion of International Students
  6. Proportion of International Faculty
