Recently the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has reviewed the progress of “Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project” (KWMTTP) in Mizoram.

  • Kaladan Multi Modal Transit Transport Project was approved in the year 2008. Its objective is to connect Northeast India with Kolkata via Sittwe port located in Rakhine province of Myanmar.
  • The first section of the project, starting from West Bengal, covers a distance of more than 500 km to the port of Sittwe.
  • Its second section is the Kaladan River waterway connecting Sittwe port to Pletwa. Its third section includes a roadway, connecting Paletwa (Myanmar) with Jorinpui (Mizoram, India).
  • Originally this project was to be completed in the year 2014 itself, but now it has been targeted to be completed by the year 2023.

Importance of KWMTTP

  • The project provides an important alternative route to Northeast India.
  • It significantly shortens the distance between the Northeast and the rest of India.
  • It facilitates India’s access to Southeast Asia through Myanmar in line with the objectives of the Act East Policy.
  • It will boost economic, commercial and strategic ties between India and Myanmar.
