In this article, we will discuss only the syllabus of the preliminary examination (UPSC Prelims Syllabus) –

According to the new examination system by the changes in 2011, the preliminary examination (UPSC Prelims Syllabus) currently consists of two question papers. The first question paper is of ‘General Studies’ and the second (Civil Services Aptitude Test) or ‘CSAT‘ which is also called ‘Civil Services Aptitude Test’ in the Hindi language which is a qualifying paper

  • Both the papers are of 200-200 marks.
  • The first paper (General Studies) consists of 100 questions of 2–2 marks each.
  • And 80 questions of 2.5-2.5 marks in the second paper (CSAT).

Negative marking (UPSC Prelims Syllabus)

In both the papers, negative marking is done, in which the wrong answer of 3 questions is deducted equal to 1 correct answer. That means 1/3 has a negative marking –
And the same provision also applies to other question papers, but in this, the candidate is required to get only 33 percent marks (ie 27 questions or 66 marks). If he scores less than this, he is considered a failure, no matter how many marks he has in the first question paper. Therefore, the cut-off for going to the main examination is decided only on the basis of the first question papers
