PM inaugurates hydroelectric projects on several rivers in Himachal Pradesh
Recently, the Prime Minister inaugurated and laid foundation stones of various hydroelectric projects on several rivers in Himachal Pradesh.
- Renukaji Dam Project on the Giri River: An important tributary of the Yamuna, the Giri River rises from the Jubbal hills. It flows through south-eastern Himachal including the Shimla Hills before joining the Yamuna upstream at Paonta below Mohkampur.
- Luhri Hydroelectric Project on River Sutlej: Originating near Raksatal (funded by Mansarovar in Tibet), Sutlej River enters India near Shipki-La Dar. It merges with the Indus in Pakistan. Bhakra Dam (India’s highest gravity dam) has been built on the Sutlej.
- Dhaulasidh Hydroelectric Project on Beas River: After its origin near Rohtangdarre in Himachal, Beas joins Sutlej at Harike in Punjab. Pong Dam Lake on the Beas River is an International Wetland Site.
- Sawra-Kuddu Hydroelectric Project on Pabbar River: It originates from Chandra Nahan Glacier. It is a tributary of Tons River, which further joins Yamuna.
