Phase III of Sagar Parikrama begins at Hazira Port in Surat

Recently the Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying launched the Sagar Parikrama Phase-III Yatra from Hazira Port in Surat, Gujarat.

The Sagar Parikrama program will be organized in all the coastal states/UTs.

Sagar Parikrama-

  • Phase I Programme of ‘Sagar Parikrama’ was organized in Gujarat, started on 5th March, 2022 from Mandvi and ended on 6th March 2022 at Porbandar, Gujarat.
  • Phase II The voyage Sagar Parikrama as Phase –II programme started on 22nd September 2022 from Mangrol to Veraval and ended at Mul Dwaraka, on 23rd September 2022 from Mul Dwaraka to Madhwad.
  • Phase III Program of ‘Sagar Parikrama’ starts from today i.e., 19th Feb 2023 from Surat, Gujarat, and ends on 21st Feb 2023 at Sasson Dock, Mumbai.

Key Point –

  • India is the world’s third largest fish producer and second largest aquaculture country. In both cases, China is in the first place.
  • India is the fourth largest fish exporting country in the world. India contributes 7.7% to the global fish production.
  • Fisheries sector has been recognized as Sunrise Sector.
  • The sector provides livelihood support to about 28 million people at the primary level and almost double that number across its entire value-chain.

Initiatives taken to promote the fishing sector-

  • Blue Revolution is primarily focused on increasing fish production and productivity from aquaculture and fish resources. This includes both inland and marine sources.
  • The Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund (FIDF) was established in the year 2015.
  • Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) is being run from the year 2020.
  • Fishermen are also being given the benefit of the Kisan Credit Card Scheme (2018-19).

Objective of Sagar Parikrama-

  • Facilitate dialogue with fishers, coastal communities and stakeholders to disseminate information on different schemes related to fisheries.
  • To show solidarity with all fishermen, fish farmers and concerned stakeholders in the spirit of self-reliant India.
  • To promote responsible fisheries with a focus on a sustainable balance between the use of marine fishery resources for the food security of the nation and the livelihood of coastal fishing communities.
