Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2020-21: Ministry of Education

Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2020 – 2021 : Ministry of Education

Recently, the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education has released the Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2020 – 2021.

This is an index based on an evidence-based comprehensive analysis of the school education system across all States/UTs.

In this index, instead of ranking, the states are given grades. The main objective behind this is to discourage the practice of giving opportunity of reform to another at the cost of one state.

The poor performing states in the system of ranking have to be put to shame.

This index highlights the inherent shortcomings and helps the States/UTs to prioritize individual sectors for implementing necessary measures. This ensures that the school education system is strong at all levels.

Performance Grading Index PGI 2020-21

The first PGI was issued in the year 2017-18. The total weightage of 1000 marks is fixed for 70 indicators in the PGI structure.

These indicators are distributed in 2 categories-

  • Outcome and
  • Governance Management (GM)

These categories are further divided into 5 sub-categories. These are:

  • Learning Outcomes (LO),
  • Access (A),
  • Infrastructure and facilities (IF),
  • Equality (E) and
  • Governing Procedure (GP)
