P-75I submarine project future uncertain after Russia pulls out
Recently Russia has distanced itself from the Project-75 India (P-75I) submarine project.
Russia says it is difficult to meet the conditions set out in the ‘Request for Proposal (RFP)’ for the construction of six modern submarines under Project-75I.
Earlier Sweden, Germany and France have also pulled out of the project.
The requirements set by the Indian Navy for this project are:
- Transfer of technology; stealth technology; State-of-the-art submarines equipped with powerful missiles, etc.
- At the moment, there is no prototype of such a submarine available in the world. These submarines will be manufactured in India only. In case the project is not completed on time, the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) will have to pay a higher penalty.
P-75I
In 1999, the Cabinet Committee on Security had approved indigenous construction of submarines for the Indian Navy. These were to be inducted into the Navy by the year 2030.
Air Independent Propulsion System (AIP)
Due to this technology, even a conventional submarine can stay underwater for longer than normal diesel-electric submarines. South Korea and Germany have this technology and it is also effective.
