Operation SamudraSetu II

  • The Indian Navy has recently launched Operation SamudraSetu-II. This operation will assist in meeting the oxygen requirements of the country.

About the operation:

  • Under this operation, warships are deployed to carry liquid oxygen filled cryogenic containers.
  • Two ships, INS Talwar and INS Kolkata have been deployed for this operation.
  • INS Talwar will transport 40 metric tonnes of oxygen from Manama to Mumbai.
  • INS Kolkata will first go to Doha for medical supplies, and then to Kuwait for a liquid oxygen tank.
  • INS Airavat will be sent to Singapore for liquid oxygen tanks.INS Jalashwa will also be sent for this mission.
  • Other ships stationed at Trikand, Kochi and Tabar will also be diverted to join the national effort.
  • INS Shardul of the Southern Naval Command has been prepared to join the operation.This operation will enhance the Oxygen Express mission, already running under the Indian Railways.

Operation SamudraSetu- I)

  • Operation SamudraSetu-I was launched in May 2020. It was launched during COVID-19 to bring back Indian nationals from abroad. It successfully brought back 3,992 Indians.
  • Similar evacuation programs were carried out by the Indian Navy in 2006 and 2015. In 2016, Operation Sukoon was launched to bring Indians back from Beirut. In 2015, Operation Rahat was launched to bring Indians back from Yemen.
