One Rank One Pension (OROP)

  • Recently, the Government has approved the revision of pension to be paid to retired defense personnel and their families under One Rank One Pension (OROP).
  • This amendment will be applicable to all defense personnel retired till June 30, However, this does not include defense personnel who are due for premature retirement till July 1, 2014.

OROP:

  • One Rank, One Pension (OROP) means that armed forces personnel retiring in the same rank and with the same length of service irrespective of the date of superannuation, will be given the same pension.
  • Thus, One Rank, One Pension (OROP) is meant to reduce the difference between the rate of pension of current and previous retired servicemen at periodic intervals.
  • While in the earlier system, the late the soldier retired, he got more pension than the soldiers who retired earlier, because the pension given by the government depends on the last salary of the employee and is changed from time to time. The salaries of the employees keep on increasing on the basis of the recommendations of the Pay Commission.
