PM Modi launches One Nation One Fertiliser Scheme
Recently, PM Modi launched the ‘Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Fertilizer Project’ during the two-day PM Kisan Samman Sammelan 2022.
This scheme is also known as ‘One Nation One Fertilizer’.
‘One Nation One Fertilizer’ Scheme:
- Under this scheme, fertilizer companies will have to market all the subsidized fertilizers under a single brand ‘Bharat’.
- With the introduction of this scheme, simple bags will be designed all over the country like Bharat Urea, Bharat DAP, Bharat MOP, Bharat NPK, etc.
- The rationale behind the scheme is that since a particular category of fertilizers must meet the nutrient-content specifications of the Fertilizer Control Order (FCO), therefore there should be no product variation between different brands for each type of fertilizer.
- In addition, there is a delay in fertilizer-supply to farmers due to brand preference by farmers and an additional burden on the exchequer due to an increase in freight subsidy paid for long-distance criss-cross movement of fertilizers.
Scheme drawbacks:
- The scheme will discourage fertilizer companies from undertaking marketing and brand promotion activities.
- Blame on Government: At present, in case any bag or batch of fertilizers does not meet the required standards, the blame lies on the company. But now, it can be given entirely to the government.
