Olive ridley sea turtle
For the first time, nests of Olive Ridley turtles have been found at Tarkarli Beach (Pulin) in Maharashtra.
- Olive Ridley is the world’s smallest and most abundant sea turtle. They are found in the warm waters of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
- They are carnivorous creatures and eat jellyfish, shrimp, snails etc.
- They are noted for their unique mass nesting.
IUCN Status: Vulnerable
Threats: Adverse fishing practices, ghost nets, illegal trade, etc.
Government Initiatives: Operation Olive, Operation Save Kurma, Legal protection under Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 etc.
