Odisha announces cash reward for rescuing gharials

Recently the Odisha government has announced a cash reward of Rs 1,000 for protecting or saving the gharial, an endangered animal of critical nature, and for informing wildlife workers.

Along with this, the Odisha government will also provide compensation for the fishermen whose nets are destroyed due to gharials.

Key Points:

It may be noted that the gharial has been listed in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Apart from this, it has been included in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Critically Endangered. Gharials are genetically weaker than crocodiles found in salt water.
