North Atlantic Treaty Organization –NATO
Sweden and Finland have applied to join NATO as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
NATO is a trans-Atlantic political and military alliance. It promotes democratic values. It is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes.
It was formed in the year 1949 with the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty. This treaty is known as the Washington Treaty. It was signed by the 12 founding members.
The North Atlantic Treaty derives its authority from Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
It currently has 30 members. North Macedonia was the last country to join in the year 2020.
