Ex-NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant is new G-20 Sherpa
Recently, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NITI Aayog, Amitabh Kant has been elected as the new Sherpa of India for the G-20 summit.
A Sherpa is the personal representative of the leader of a member country in an international summit such as G-8, G-20, Nuclear Security Summit etc.
The word is derived from Nepali Sherpa people. These act as guides for the climbers in the Himalayas.
Sherpas are involved in planning, negotiation and implementation through summits.
There is only one Sherpa per summit for each member country. However, it is assisted by a number of subordinate Sherpas.
