New variant of Coronavirus AY.1

Recently, the World Health Organization tagged a delta variant (B.1.617.2) of the coronavirus, which has now changed. This new mutated version of the Delta Edition is being called the “Delta Plus” or “AY.1” version.

  • The ‘delta’ variant was identified as one of the factors in the second wave of corona virus infection in India.
  • Preliminary data suggest that the delta plus variant has resistance against monoclonal antibody cocktail treatments.

Delta Plus Variant

  • The variant B.617.2.1 of the corona virus is expressed as AY.1. So far, delta plus variants have been identified in 6 genomes in India.
  • The health agency has also confirmed the presence of 63 genomes of the delta variant with the new K417N mutation. However, there is no immediate cause for concern as the Delta Plus variant is still in low circulation in India.
  • According to reports, 36 cases of Delta Plus variants have been reported in England. Most of the cases were linked to travel to Nepal, Malaysia, Turkey and Singapore.
