Nationwide River Ranching Programme (NRRP)

Recently the Nationwide River Ranching Program was launched.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), ‘River Ranching Programme’ has been started as a special activity. The objective of this program is to promote and further enhance fish production and productivity through expansion, intensification, diversification and productive use of land and water.

The program will help in achieving the goal of sustainable fisheries, reducing habitat degradation, conserving biodiversity, maximizing socio-economic benefits and assessing ecosystem services.

The National Fisheries Development Board (NEDB) has been designated as the nodal agency for this programme.

Under the program phase, NFDB has targeted three major river systems viz., Ganga and its tributaries, tributaries of Brahmaputra and Barak rivers and Mahanadi and other rivers during the year 2020-21.

As a result, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Bihar have been selected as the six major inland states focusing on the length of the river belt.

PMMSY is a flagship scheme for focused and sustainable development of the fisheries sector in the country. For its implementation, an estimated investment of Rs 20,050 crore will be made for a period of 5 years from FY 2020-21 to FY 32024-25 across all States/UTs as a part of Atmanirbhar Bharat Package.
