National Statistics Day organized on 9 June
Every year 29th June is celebrated as National Statistics Day. The purpose of this day is to popularize the use of statistics in everyday life.
It may be noted that the National Statistical System was established by Prof. Prashant Chandra Mahalanobis on 29th June and 29th June is the birth anniversary of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis. Hence this day was chosen to honor his contributions for this.
National Statistics Day was celebrated for the first time in the year 2007, and World Statistics Day is celebrated on 20 October.
Objective of National Statistics Day
Statistics helps in shaping and formulating the policies of the government. Statistics helps in presenting the results effectively through proper analysis and proper methods of collecting data. Therefore, it is celebrated only to make the citizens of the country aware.
Prof. P C Mahalanobis:
- Professor P.C. Mahalanobis has been awarded Padma Vibhushan in the year 1968 for his contribution in the field of statistics.
- He also served as the chairman of the United Nations Deputy Commission on Statistical Sampling from 1947 to In the year 1931, Mahalanobis established the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI).
- After independence, a comprehensive socio-economic National Sample Survey was designed and planned by the ISI, for this survey the National Sample Survey (NSS) was established by them in the year
- As of today, the NSS is the principal agency of the Government of India for the collection of sample surveys in the country.
